An innovative machine to recycle solar panels

Students from ICAM Toulouse have designed a revolutionary machine, the "deframer", to improve the recycling of disused solar panels. Presented on February 17, 2025 at the Envie Occitanie Recycling Center, this innovation makes it possible to cleanly separate materials (aluminum frame, connectors, photovoltaic sheet) and thus reduce waste. Developed by 21 students, this machine adapts to all sizes of panels and lightens the work of operators. Currently, 97% of the components are recyclable, but silicone makes their processing difficult. This technology could avoid the incineration or landfilling of the panels. Capable of dismantling up to 60 panels per hour, the machine cost €73,000, financed by Envie. It represents a major step forward for more efficient and sustainable recycling of photovoltaic panels.
