The spectacular rebirth of the French cycle factory

Taken over in 2013 by Intersport after Cycleurope filed for bankruptcy, the century-old factory in Machecoul-Saint-Même (Loire-Atlantique) is now the largest bicycle assembly site in France. Renamed Manufacture française du cycle (MFC), it employs 650 people on 35,000 m² and can produce up to 600,000 bicycles per year. Intersport invested €40 million to focus on electric bicycles (EABs), a visionary choice: "We focused on assembly in France, which is more sustainable and competitive," summarizes Gérard Leclerc, CEO of Intersport. As a result, MFC is now the number one manufacturer of e-bikes in France and the leading assembler of all types of bicycles.
